Old Visitor Center
The Old Visitor Center across the street (notice the reflection of the First Bank) was, until 2010, the Independence Living History Center Archaeology Laboratory, an open-to-the-public feast of shards, bones, and broken glass. The laboratory has been a working facility dedicated to processing materials recovered from archeological excavations conducted between 2000 and 2003 prior to, and during, construction of the National Constitution Center. The Visitor Center has moved to the Mall, north of the Liberty Bell Center. The bell in the tower here, cast at Whitechapel Foundry, was a gift to the people of the United States in 1976 from Queen Elizabeth.
The Independence Living History Center Archaeology Laboratory closed on June 18, 2010 as part of an exchange between the National Park Service and the National Center for the American Revolution, a private organization which traded 78 acres of land within the boundary of Valley Forge National Historical Park for 0.87 acres owned by the United States of America, which included the Independence Living History Center Archaeology Laboratory.
