Button Gwinnett was born in England around 1735. He settled in Savannah, Georgia, and was a member of the Continental Congress in 1776 and 1777. He died in 1777, while Governor of Georgia. As John Hancock's signature on the Declaration of Independence is the largest, Mr. Gwinnett's is the smallest.

Mugwumps were also known as the Independent Republicans. "Mugwump" is derived from an Indian word meaning "big chief." After the nomiation of James G. Blaine in 1884, this group bolted from the party, over the issue of the protective tarriff. The Mugwumps supported the Democratic nominee for President, Grover Cleveland. Mugwump leaders included Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge, and Henry Ward Beecher. Today the word "mugwump" is used to mean any person who refuses to take sides on an issue.
